On 25 July 2026 the 48th session of the Unesco World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea, inscribed Wadi Wurayah National Park in Fujairah on the World Heritage List. It is the first property in the United Arab Emirates recognised for outstanding universal natural value, and the country’s third World Heritage site after the Cultural Sites of Al Ain (2011) and the Faya Palaeolandscape in Sharjah (2025). What exactly was inscribed
Wadi Wurayah National Park covers 220 square kilometres in the Hajar Mountains, roughly 45 kilometres from the city of Fujairah. It was declared the UAE’s first national park in 2013, so the Unesco listing does not create protection from scratch: it places an existing protected area under internationally recognised conservation and management standards supervised by Unesco. Why a natural listing reads differently from a cultural one
Al Ain and Faya were inscribed for what people did in the landscape. Wadi Wurayah is inscribed for the landscape itself, and that shifts the obligations. Cultural sites are managed largely through conservation of built fabric and archaeology. A natural property is judged on the condition of living systems: water, species counts, habitat continuity, pressure from visitors and from any development in the buffer zone. Reporting to Unesco is therefore ongoing and measurable, and the state party carries a standing commitment to keep the values intact.
For business the practical translation is simple. Fujairah has long marketed mountains, diving and beaches, but it competed against Dubai and Abu Dhabi without a distinguishing label. Inscription typically lifts international awareness of a destination, and awareness is what Fujairah has lacked rather than assets. The important nuance is that a protected core cannot absorb mass tourism. Companies looking at land, construction, extraction or infrastructure in the Hajar range should assume heavier environmental impact assessment, longer approval timelines and closer scrutiny from the Fujairah Environment Authority. Fujairah’s mountains have hosted significant quarrying activity for decades; a Unesco property inside that same range means the balance of permitted activity will be recalibrated. Budgeting for that review early is cheaper than discovering it after a lease is signed.
Fujairah becomes a more complete second address
