Dubai Factory Making Half the World’s Kiteboards Wins Dubai-it Award

2026-10-17

SWS Board Technology, a Dubai manufacturer that makes half of the world’s kiteboards and wakeboards and one third of its snowboards, has won the Dubai-it Award for Projects in the Field of Economy. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, announced the result on Saturday, 17 October 2026. The company’s Dubai production has an annual capacity of more than 450,000 boards and has sold more than 6 million boards worldwide for leading international brands. The announcement follows the Roads and Transport Authority’s win in the government institutions category on 11 October.

What Sheikh Hamdan announced

Sheikh Hamdan, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence of the UAE and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, congratulated the SWS Board Technology team in a post on X. Explaining the choice, he said: “From Dubai, entrepreneur Rainier Nouhra built one of the world’s largest board manufacturing businesses. Today, SWS Board Technology produces half the world’s kiteboards and wakeboards and one-third of its snowboards, with annual capacity exceeding 450,000 boards and more than 6 million sold worldwide.”

According to Khaleej Times and Gulf News, boards made by the company have been used at the Winter Olympic Games and at world championships. Sheikh Hamdan also pointed to the company’s work on sustainability, which Gulf News describes as solar-powered operations and recycling solutions in production.

What the Dubai-it Award is

The Dubai-it Award was set up under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan and announced in June 2026. It grows out of the Dubai-it initiative of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and it is meant to recognise individuals, projects, institutions and companies that turn ambitious ideas into measurable results in a short time. The award runs every year across 10 fields: government, real estate, economy, business, technology, sports, society, education, services and health.

Nominations for the first edition were open from 10 August to 10 September 2026 on dubai-it.ae, and achievements from the previous four years were eligible. Mohammad Al Gergawi, Chairman of The Executive Office, said the award received hundreds of nominations. We covered the rules, the eight evaluation criteria and the nomination process in our guide to the Dubai-it Award nominations.

The first winner, announced on 11 October 2026, was the Roads and Transport Authority in the category Institutions in the Field of Government. SWS, a private manufacturer, was recognised in a different segment: as a project in the field of economy rather than as an institution.

Why this matters for companies in the UAE

The case is worth reading less as an award story and more as an operating model. A board factory serving global brands from Dubai combines several things the UAE offers to industrial companies: a free zone legal entity, a hub in Jafza next to Jebel Ali port, access to international talent, and a base from which finished goods can be shipped to Europe, the Americas and Asia.

The structure SWS discloses on its website is typical for an export manufacturer in the UAE. The trading name sits on a free zone establishment (FZE, a single shareholder free zone company), while different functions are split by location: production in Dubai, an integration hub in Jafza, sourcing and compliance in India, product development in Switzerland. Companies planning a similar set-up usually make the key decision at the start: where the factory sits, under which licence, and how goods move between the free zone, the UAE mainland and export markets. Our comparison of mainland and free zone companies in the UAE sets out the main differences.

The award also shows what the Dubai government chose to highlight in the economy category: scale that can be measured, an export business built over two decades, and a documented sustainability record. For companies thinking about the next edition, the published rules say later cycles will consider achievements from the preceding 24 months, with nominations in June, July and August.

Checklist: setting up a manufacturing or OEM business in the UAE

  • Choose the jurisdiction: an industrial free zone, a free zone with warehousing and port access, or a mainland industrial area, depending on where the customers are.
  • Match the licence to the activity: manufacturing, assembly and trading are separate activities and should be listed correctly from day one.
  • Plan the premises: a factory or warehouse lease is usually required before an industrial licence is issued.
  • Register for customs and decide how goods will move between the free zone, the mainland and export markets.
  • Budget visa quotas for production staff, engineers and managers.
  • Open a corporate bank account early: banks will ask for the business plan, supplier and customer contracts and the shipping routes.
  • Collect the certifications that brand customers expect, such as quality, labour or environmental standards.

Conclusion

SWS Board Technology has won the Dubai-it Award in the economy projects category for building a board factory in Dubai that now makes half of the world’s kiteboards and wakeboards and one third of its snowboards. With capacity above 450,000 boards a year, more than 6 million boards sold and a solar-powered plant, it is one of the first winners of the new award, which Dubai plans to run every year.
