HSBC Launches UAE’s First “International by Default” Account: 20+ Currencies, One IBAN, One Card

Published: 2026-08-25

On 2026-08-25 HSBC UAE launched the Premier Global Money Account, which the bank describes as the UAE’s first “international by default” bank account: one multi-currency account with a single IBAN and a single Visa debit card, in which Premier customers can hold, spend, transfer and receive money in more than 20 currencies with no HSBC fees, from the moment the account is opened. The UAE is the first market in the HSBC group to get the product; the bank plans to roll the same proposition out to other HSBC markets within the next 1-2 years. HSBC’s published Premier criteria in the UAE are a monthly salary transfer of at least AED 40,000 (AED 30,000 for UAE nationals) with a Total Relationship Balance of AED 500,000 built up within 12 months, or a Total Relationship Balance of AED 500,000 held in deposits and investments.

What HSBC launched on 2026-08-25

Multi-currency accounts are not new in the Emirates: HSBC itself has offered a separate Global Money Account in its UAE app for several years, and several local banks let customers open sub-accounts in USD, EUR or GBP. What changed on 2026-08-25 is the default. Under the new Premier Global Money Account the multi-currency capability is switched on at onboarding, so the customer does not open a separate foreign-currency wallet, wait for activation or move money between products. According to HSBC’s product pages, all supported currencies sit under one account number and one IBAN, with AED as the primary currency, and are linked to one Visa debit card available in physical and digital form.

HSBC UAE positions the launch as a wealth-market decision. Mohamed Al Marzooqi, Chief Executive of HSBC UAE, said the UAE is one of the group’s most important wealth markets and that the bank is committed to giving internationally minded customers tailored services. Lavanya Chari, Head of Wealth and Premier Solutions, described the aim as making international banking feel effortless by using the group’s global connectivity. HSBC has operated in the UAE for 80 years, and the Emirates were chosen to lead a rollout that will reach other HSBC markets over 1-2 years.

Two details deserve a closer look. First, “no HSBC fees” refers to the bank’s own charges: currency conversion still happens at the bank’s rate, which HSBC describes as preferential, and third-party banks in the chain may charge their own fees on transfers in unsupported currencies. Second, the fee-free receiving of 20 currencies is the feature most relevant to anyone paid from abroad: a consultant invoicing in EUR or GBP can receive the money directly into the matching currency wallet under the same IBAN instead of taking a forced conversion into AED on arrival.

Why the UAE went first

The choice of market reflects who lives and banks here. The large majority of the UAE population are foreign nationals, and a large share of Premier-level customers earn, invest, own property or support family in more than one country. For those customers a bank account that treats AED, USD, EUR and GBP as equally native is closer to how they actually live. HSBC has spent 2025-2026 building out its wealth business in the Emirates: a dedicated wealth centre in Dubai, a newly established asset-management business and, on 2026-08-25, the first “international by default” account in the group. The bank’s own description of the UAE as one of its most important wealth markets is consistent with that sequence.

The launch also lands in a competitive market. Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Mashreq and the digital banks have all invested heavily in app-based onboarding and cross-border payments, and multi-currency features are now a standard line in every premium proposition. HSBC’s differentiator is not the number of currencies but the architecture: one IBAN, one card, everything active on day one, and a global network that lets the same customer open and manage HSBC accounts in other countries through one login.

What it means for business owners and expats in the UAE

The account is a personal Premier product, not a corporate account, so it does not replace a company account for a free zone or mainland entity. Where it does matter is the personal layer that sits around a business:

  • founders who receive dividends or salary from a UAE company and hold savings in USD or EUR no longer need separate foreign-currency accounts to avoid conversions;
  • consultants and freelancers paid by clients in Europe or the UK can receive EUR and GBP fee-free into the currency wallet under one IBAN;
  • families with education fees, mortgages or rent abroad can hold the target currency and pay when the rate suits, rather than converting on each transfer;
  • frequent travellers use one Visa card that settles in the local currency wallet where the bank supports it, without foreign-currency processing fees;
  • relocating professionals who already bank with HSBC elsewhere can link accounts across countries and move money between them with no HSBC fees.

The thresholds are the real filter. Premier is built for a salary of AED 40,000 a month or a relationship balance of AED 500,000, and customers below those levels either pay the AED 200 monthly fee or look at the Advance tier and other banks. For a new arrival, the sequence is usually company licence, residence visa, Emirates ID and then a personal account; the bank will ask for the same documents regardless of the product. Our guide to opening a bank account in the UAE walks through that order and the typical timelines.

How Atlant Capital can help

We work with clients who are setting up in the Emirates and need the whole chain to work: a licensed company, a residence visa, a personal account and a corporate account that actually gets opened. We advise on company setup in the UAE in free zones and on the mainland, handle work visas and residency for founders and staff, and prepare bank account opening files that match what compliance teams expect, including for clients with income in several currencies. If you want to know which bank and which account tier fit your structure and cash flows before you commit, we will map it out with you.

Conclusion

HSBC’s Premier Global Money Account is a signal as much as a product: a global bank chose the UAE as the first market for its “international by default” account, with 20+ currencies, one IBAN, one Visa card and no HSBC fees from day one, and it plans to export the model to other markets over the next 1-2 years. For internationally paid professionals and business owners who meet the Premier criteria, the account removes a layer of currency wallets and conversions. For everyone else it raises the baseline that the rest of the UAE banking market will now be measured against.
