24 October 2026
Dubai has added two Guinness World Records titles to its gold trade: the heaviest and the largest pair of gold earrings. The pair, called Mayura Sahasra, was made by Joyalukkas Jewellery from 22-carat gold and has a combined net gold weight of 16.514 kg, more than five times the previous record. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, unveiled the earrings on Saturday, 24 October 2026, at the Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas showroom in Dubai Gold District. The pair measures 1.215 metres in length, took 55 artisans 5,840 hours of work, and is now on permanent public display with free entry.
What was unveiled on 24 October
Mayura Sahasra means “A Thousand Peacocks”. The earrings follow the shape of the jhumka, a traditional bell-shaped earring linked to South Asian jewellery and bridal traditions, and their detailing reproduces peacock plumage. According to Guinness World Records, Joyalukkas created them as enlarged versions of a traditional, wearable design to showcase Indian jewellery craftsmanship.
The record page published by Guinness World Records states that the heaviest pair of gold earrings weighs 16.514 kilograms and that the record was achieved by Joyalukkas Jewellery in Dubai on 12 October 2026. The public unveiling followed twelve days later. At the ceremony, an official Guinness World Records adjudicator presented certificates for both titles to Minister Al Marri, Dr Joy Alukkas, chairman of Joyalukkas Group, and John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewellery.
Representatives of the gold sector attended the event, including Laila Mohd Suhail, member of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group and chair of its marketing committee, Rashid Alharmoodi, senior director of commercial at Dubai Gold District, and Levy Pezulu, senior policy lead at the World Gold Council.

Where to see the earrings
The Mayura Sahasra pair is on permanent display at Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas in Dubai Gold District. The showroom is open from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week, and entry is free for residents and tourists.
Jewel of Joy opened in October 2026, shortly before the unveiling. It covers 25,000 square feet and is described as the biggest jewellery showroom in the Middle East. Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, inaugurated it. The centrepiece is The Royal Bangle Walk, an oversized bangle that visitors can walk through. Joyalukkas operates more than 200 showrooms worldwide, has teams in 13 countries and has been in the UAE for nearly four decades.
John Paul Alukkas told Gulf News that the company wanted to give something back to Dubai after 40 years in the country: “Dubai is always known as a city of gold. This is only going to complement it even more.” He also said the company sells 22-carat and 18-carat collections and plans to introduce 14-carat jewellery as customers ask for lighter designs.
Dubai Gold District in brief
Dubai Gold District is developed by Ithra Dubai in Deira and was officially unveiled in January 2026. It brings gold and jewellery retail, wholesale trading, bullion services and investment-linked businesses into one area. According to Ithra Dubai, the district has:
- more than 1,000 retailers across gold, jewellery, perfumery, cosmetics and lifestyle categories;
- more than 1,000 hotel rooms across six hotels for visitors, buyers and trade partners;
- visitors from more than 147 nationalities in 2025;
- plans for what the developer calls the world’s first Gold Street, built with gold elements, with design and construction details to be released in phases.
Jewellery brands in the district include Jawhara Jewellery, Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Al Romaizan and Tanishq Jewellery. Gulf News describes the UAE as the world’s second-largest physical gold trading destination.
What it means for gold and jewellery businesses
The record itself does not change any rules. The earrings were unveiled by the minister whose ministry also supervises jewellery and bullion dealers for anti-money laundering compliance, and anyone planning to trade gold or jewellery in the UAE works within a fixed set of requirements:
- Licence. Retail showrooms in Deira operate under a Dubai mainland licence, while many wholesale and bullion traders choose a free zone. The choice affects where you can sell and to whom.
- AML registration. Dealers in precious metals and stones fall under UAE anti-money laundering rules supervised by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism and must register on the goAML platform.
- Cash threshold. Under Ministry of Economy Circular 08/AML/2021, every cash transaction or set of linked cash transactions of AED 55,000 or more must be reported through goAML as a Dealers in Precious Metals and Stones Report.
- VAT. Jewellery is subject to the standard 5% VAT, while investment-grade gold of 99% purity or more is zero-rated. Trade between VAT-registered gold dealers can fall under the reverse charge mechanism.
- Bank account. Banks apply enhanced due diligence to gold traders, so the source of goods, suppliers and expected cash volumes need to be documented before the account application.
