Document Legalization and Attestation in the UAE

Documents used in the UAE may need translation, notarization, attestation or other verification steps depending on where the document was issued, where it will be used and which authority, bank or counterparty will receive it.
What attestation means
MOFA describes attestation as a process that verifies the authenticity of signatures and official seals on documents issued inside or outside the UAE. It does not rewrite the document; it confirms that the relevant signature or seal can be accepted through the applicable route.
Why the route depends on the document
A birth certificate, degree, power of attorney, commercial document or company certificate may follow different steps. The country of issue, document type, language, receiving authority and whether the document is digital or non-digital can affect the process.
Translation, notarization and prior attestations
Some documents need certified translation, notarization or prior attestations before the UAE step. For foreign-issued documents, the route may involve authorities in the issuing country and UAE mission or MOFA processes. Requirements should be checked before sending originals.
