The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) will disperse more than 10 million seeds of native desert plants by air across the emirate in 2026-2027, Gulf News reported on 2 August 2026. Drones and aircraft will scatter seeds of ghaf, samar and four other indigenous species over Al Shuwayb, Sweihan and other inland districts, as well as the Al Ghada Nature Reserve, while satellite imagery and artificial intelligence select the exact seeding points and then track germination for up to two years. The project says something simple and important about where the UAE is heading: the country that built the world’s tallest tower is now investing technology and long-term planning in something as unglamorous as desert soil, because a livable green environment has become part of its economic offer.
Ten million seeds, six native species
The programme relies exclusively on plants that have survived in the Arabian desert for millennia: ghaf, samar, arta, shoua, raghal and thamam. Species are matched to each location according to soil characteristics, salinity levels and existing ground cover, so that every seed lands where it has a realistic chance to germinate rather than being scattered evenly across the map. This precision matters, because in a hyper-arid climate the difference between a viable seedling and a wasted seed often comes down to a few metres of terrain.
The 2026-2027 seeding map covers Al Shuwayb, Sweihan, Nahil, Al Hayer and Al Rawdah, alongside expanded restoration inside the Al Ghada Nature Reserve and the Houbara Protected Area in Al Dhafra. These are precisely the zones where decades of grazing pressure and extreme aridity have thinned out natural vegetation, and where restored ground cover does the most good: stabilising soils, feeding wildlife and slowing desertification at the edges of inhabited areas.
How AI decides where a seed should land
Before anything flies, the agency’s specialists analyse satellite imagery, remote sensing data and geographic information systems to shortlist degraded areas where intervention will pay off. Vegetation indices such as NDVI and SAVI, standard tools for measuring plant health from orbit, help pinpoint spots where ground cover has retreated but soil conditions still support recovery.
Then the aircraft and custom-designed drones do the sowing. Aerial seeding covers vast areas quickly and, just as importantly, keeps trucks and work crews out of fragile habitats. Hassan Ali Al Ahbabi, Plant Genetic Resources Centre Specialist at EAD, describes the programme as a pioneering effort to rehabilitate natural habitats and restore vegetation cover using technologies capable of covering large areas efficiently while minimising human disturbance. Once the seeds are down, the same satellite and field monitoring toolkit tracks germination and seedling survival for up to two years, feeding results back into the models so that every subsequent seeding round is smarter than the last.
Built on a proven track record
This is not a first experiment. EAD has already completed a project that dispersed 6.5 million native seeds by drone across the emirate’s nature reserves, and Abu Dhabi has separately used drones to plant millions of mangrove seeds along its coastline. The new campaign scales up an approach the agency has been refining for years, and aerial seeding of over 10 million seeds was among the priorities highlighted around EAD’s 2026 board meetings chaired by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In other words, aerial ecosystem restoration in Abu Dhabi has moved from pilot to standing policy.
