The new lanes serve traffic coming from Sharjah towards the Wadi Al Amardi area in eastern Dubai, take the section from six to eight lanes and lift its capacity from about 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour, an increase of one third. RTA said the works were planned on the basis of traffic studies and projected population and urban growth, so that the network can absorb future demand rather than only today’s volumes. The authority described the expansion as part of a wider programme to upgrade key corridors in response to rising traffic and the continued growth of Dubai and the surrounding areas, and said it will provide smoother and safer journeys while improving connections between Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
Why this stretch matters
Emirates Road, signposted E611, is the outer ring of the Dubai road system. It runs around the built-up city and continues north through Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain towards Ras Al Khaimah, connecting on the way to the major radial roads, residential communities and the industrial and logistics areas on Dubai’s eastern and southern edge. Unlike Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road it has no Salik toll gates, which makes it the default route for trucks and for commuters who want to avoid daily toll charges.
The Sharjah-to-Dubai direction is the classic morning bottleneck of the UAE. A large share of Dubai’s workforce lives in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates because of lower rents, and the three parallel corridors, Al Ittihad Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road, absorb that flow every working day. The section towards Wadi Al Amardi feeds the eastern districts of Dubai, Al Khawaneej, Al Awir, Mirdif and the industrial and warehouse areas beyond, and then continues towards the south of the emirate. Adding a third of capacity on exactly this stretch is the difference between a queue that builds up from 07:00 and traffic that keeps moving.
Part of a 28-location summer programme
The two lanes on Emirates Road were first announced on 2026-06-30, when RTA presented a package of rapid traffic improvements at 28 locations across Dubai, scheduled between July and September 2026 and timed for the summer school break, when traffic is lighter and works can be completed faster with less disruption. Locations were selected on the basis of technical studies, traffic surveys, historical traffic data, intelligent transport systems, surveillance cameras and public feedback. Alongside Emirates Road the package includes:
- Business Bay: improvements at the intersection of Trade Centre Street and Marasi Drive.
- Ras Al Khor Road: traffic enhancements towards Al Khail Road, and a second right-turn lane towards Dubai-Al Ain Road.
- Residential areas: a new lane at the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street and Al Amardi Street, and lane widening on Algeria Street in Al Mizhar 4.
- School zones: new parking spaces at Zayed Educational Complex in Al Mizhar 2 and at Horizon International School in Umm Al Sheif.
- Latifa Bint Hamdan Street: traffic enhancements near Al Quoz Industrial Area.
Emirates Road itself has seen a series of smaller interventions in recent years: a new access point linking the road with Al Awir 1, upgraded entry and exit points, traffic changes at several points along the corridor, and better connections between Emirates Road, Al Amardi Street and the development areas next to them. The August opening is the largest single capacity increase on the Dubai section of the road in this cycle.
Two Emirates Road projects, not one
The RTA works should not be confused with the federal upgrade of the same highway further north. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is spending AED 750 million to widen the 25 km stretch of Emirates Road between Al Badee Interchange and Umm Al Quwain from three to five lanes in each direction, with six directional bridges and a rebuilt Interchange No. 7; capacity there rises by 65% and completion is expected by autumn 2027. The Dubai project is smaller, 5 km instead of 25 km, but it opens now, and it addresses the point where the traffic from the north actually enters the emirate. Taken together, the two programmes widen the corridor from both ends.

What it means for business

- Logistics. Trucks between Dubai’s industrial areas, the Al Awir and Al Quoz zones and Jebel Ali on one side and Sharjah’s industrial areas, Hamriyah and Ras Al Khaimah on the other use Emirates Road as the toll-free route. Higher throughput on the 5 km section means more reliable transit times for the same fleet.
- Location choices. Eastern Dubai, Al Khawaneej, Al Awir and the areas along the corridor, becomes more attractive for warehouses, workshops and back offices that need both Dubai registration and easy access from the north.
- Planning horizon. RTA sized the project for projected population and urban growth, not for current demand, which signals that the corridor will remain a priority as the eastern districts fill up.
